Two girls killed in wild elephant attack

Two girls aged 9 and 11 have reportedly died after a wild elephant attacked their home at Mapakadawewa in Mahiyangana.

Police said the attack had taken place at around 10.30 p.m. last night.

When two wild elephants had started to attack their home last night, the 9-year-old girl’s mother had attempted to flee from the house along with her daughter and 11-year-old niece.

However, the elephants had charged after them and attacked.

The house had also sustained serious damage in the attack carried out by the elephants, Ada Derana Reporter said.

PC killed by wild elephant

A Police Constable riding on a motorcycle was attacked by a wild elephant and died on
admission at the Maradankadawala hospital.

The victim PC 70790 W.M. Ranjan Wijesekara, attached to the Modara Police was a resident
of Ethungama Road in Tirappane. The PC on leave was on his way home after visiting

Galkulama when the motorcycle hit against a jumbo moving across the road near

Gnanikulam Bridge at Thirappane on the Jaffna-kandy A-9 Road.

Investigations revealed the jumbo had attacked him when the motorcycle toppled on the
road. Residents of the area who rushed to the scene informed the Thirappane Police and
the offcer was admitted to the Maradankadawala hospital only to be pronounced dead.

Two hospitalised after elephant attacks three-wheeler

Two persons were wounded and hospitalised after a wild elephant attacked the three-wheeler they were traveling in at Menikdeniya in Welikanda this morning (8).

Ada Derana reporter said that the incident has occurred at around 7.00am today when a 52-year-old man, his daughter (27) and son (15) were traveling towards Embilipitiya.

The teenage boy had managed to flee and save himself as the elephant suddenly attacked the three-wheeler, however his father and sister were still stuck inside the vehicle.

They were both later rescued by residents in the area and admitted to the Welikanda Hospital.

It has been reported that the three-wheeler had been damaged to such an extent that the woman was stuck inside the vehicle for around half an hour.

Elephant strikes Gr.5 student and her mother in Mahiyangana

A schoolgirl, who was taken in a bicycle by her mother to sit for the Grade 5 scholarship examination
at Haddattawa Secondary School in Mahiyangane, had been attacked by a wild elephant
yesterday morning, the police said.
They sustained injuries in the attack, and were rushed to the hospital for treatment. The victims
are Sayuri Sathsarani and her mother D.M. Sepalika Kumari. After initial treatment, the
child was discharged from the hospital to sit for the exam. The education authorities of the
area with the police had encouraged the victim to sit the scholarship examination.
The wild elephant that was on the wayside had attacked them when they were riding to the
school yesterday morning.

Wild elephant attack kills two in Panama

Two persons have died due to being attacked by a wild elephant in Panama, Amparai.

Police said that the victims were fishermen and they were on their way toward Panama tank when the tragedy struck.

They succumbed to their injuries after being admitted to Akkaraipattu Hospital.

The victims, aged 56 and 61, were residents of the area.

Thai villager killed by wild elephants

Wild elephants have killed a man in western Thailand as he and other villagers tried to keep the animals away from their crops.


A 54-year-old Thai man has been killed by a herd of wild elephants in the western province of Kanchanburi, in the second dangerous encounter between humans and elephants this month, local media reports say.

The attack involved 10 female elephants and their calves, and occurred late on Sunday as the man and others in his village were trying to keep the animals away from their crops, the Bangkok Post said.

The victim, Thamsin Ratananupappot, was reportedly part of a group of villagers that had been using slingshots to keep the 30-strong herd of elephants out of their village.

The villagers had been patrolling the land, trying to keep elephants from entering, every night for the past month, the Post said.

On May 16, a wild elephant attacked a 73-year-old man in Kanchanaburi province, breaking his ribs and back, but the man survived.
