Elephant calf, left behind by herd, rescued
A baby elephant that was suspected to be about one week old, that was found at the Mattala
work site on the Southern Expressway, was handed over to the Udawalawa Elephant Transit
Home by Wildlife Conservation Ocers in Hambantota.
Wildlife officers said the elephant calf that had been left behind by the herd, had been starving for several days and that they had rushed to the scene after being informed by workers at
the site about it’s plight and had provided it emergency treatment before taking it to the Elephant Transit Home.
They pointed out that elephant calves usually get left behind by the herd due to the haphazard
clearing of their natural habitats.
Wildlife Guards Janaka Suranga, L.N.G.A Sampath, and Field Asst. Kelum Lakmal were instrumental in rescuing the baby elephant.
